It is hard to believe that the students are back in school, Illinois football has started another season and the Hullabaloo is over. I guess the reality of turning the calendar to September is setting in.

Congratulations to: August had many highlights so buckle up and enjoy!
The headline this month has to go to Jeff Hedge for his Hole-In-One during the recent Hullabaloo. Jeff’s magical shot resulted in him winning a brand new automobile thanks to the participation of several local dealerships.

HoleIn-One’s were also carded by new member Chip Craddock on #7, and Lizzy Dombroski, see story below.

Kudos to Clayton Parkhill for his second consecutive Men’s Twin City victory, third of his young career. Clayton holed a long birdie putt on the second hole (#2) of a sudden death playoff with Tim Hoss Jr. Clayton also finished in a tie for 19th at the recent CDGA State Amateur. Way to go Clayton!

Congrats are also in order for Lizzy Dombroski
, she captured the Women’s Twin City title highlighted by her lifetime low 76 (at UGCC). Lizzy’s highlight reel continued with a Hole-In-One on #7 at Stone Creek GC (Carbondale). It was Lizzy’s first shot of the 2008 high school season as she was assigned hole #7 in a shotgun start. Wow, what a great start!

Lifetime lows were recorded by: Jenna Dombroski (69) at Railside (in Gibson City), Martha Baddour (95), Penny Griglione (93) at Urbana Golf & CC, Barb Harrington (88) at Coyotte Run, site of the Mystery Bus Trip and Wil Baillon (71). Wil’s round was highlighted by eagles on #1 and #6.

While on the subject of eagles, Al Mitchell carded an eagle on #5, Larry Grill and Greg Grieme both eagled #15, and Steve Sabol flew his second shot on #18 into the cup for an eagle 2. Willie Hansen carded her first ever birdie on #9 at Stone Creek (in Urbana).

Our 2008 Women’s Club Champions are: Sue Peterson won the Championship Flight, while Barb Harrington won the First Flight making it two in a row.

Our 2008 Men’s Club Champions are:
Jeff Miller won the Championship Flight, Rick Reifsteck won the Consolation Championship, Steve Wanzek won the First Flight, Roger Peterson won the Second Flight and Greg Bolton won the Third Flight. Congrats to all our Club Champions.

Hullabaloo champion bragging rights go out to: Sue Peterson, Cheryl Rushing, Barb Harrington and Cris Heinrich in the Women’s Division, and Justin Kirby, Mark Wisniewski, Steve Gilbertz and Craig Detamore in the Men’s Division. Great team efforts by both squads!

Thank You: I would like to thank the following individuals for their contributions to this year’s fantastic Hullabaloo: Committee, Debbie Millage, Steve Wanzek and Mike Zopf. Volunteers, Linda Hamilton, Tammy Keeling, Ruby Whitsitt, Linda Wagner and Marilynne Wright. Shootout sponsors: Orange & Blue Distributing, O’Brien Auto Park. Staff, Chris Reis, Thomas Wilsey, Chris Alwes, Scott Werner, Kevin Bagley and their collective support staffs. As you can see, the Hullabaloo is no small undertaking.

Golf Shop Closure: Please be aware that the Golf Shop will be closed on Tuesday September 2nd. The course will open for general play at Noon, however, there will not be any rental carts or clubhouse service. Thereafter, the Golf Shop will be closed on Mondays for the remainder of the year. However, the course will open at Noon pending any private outings.

“Mean 18 Event”: Scheduled for Friday October 17th with a 1:00p shotgun start, this scramble format event is all about bringing your best and putting it to the test. The course will be set up long and the pins will be tucked. Certainly not for the faint of heart, it’s surely a chance to see the “whole” course.
This event is open to members and guests alike. Unlike the inaugural event in 2007, this year will have a women’s division. In addition to the gross and women’s divisions, we will also award a low net winner.
At this time the details of the event are still being finalized, however, expect an email announcement in the near future for what will be included for this great event.
Contact your friends and make sure you reserve a spot in this “bring your best” event.

Fall Scramble: Scheduled for Sunday October 12th, this annual favorite gives you the opportunity to put your own winning team together. A team handicap of 10% of the total handicaps will be deducted from the gross score. The entry fee is $20 per player, with 100% payout from entry fees. No formal tee times, just whenever your foursome is ready to go (low)! Advanced sign-ups encouraged.

Fall Member-Guest: Our annual Fall Member-Guest is scheduled for Friday September 26th with a 1:00p shotgun start. This event is open to men, women and mixed teams. We will be playing a one net best ball format with men playing from the blue tees and women from the white tees. All of the $30 (per team) entry fee will be paid out in Golf Shop credit. Sign-ups are limited to the first 44 two-player teams.

Early Morning Golf: The Early Morning Golf program will continue through the month of September. This means you may play on Tuesday & Thursday mornings beginning at 6:30a on the designated nine. However, please be aware that rental carts will not be available until the customary 8am. Also, it is the responsibility of private cart owners to check the status board outside the Golf Shop for possible cart restrictions. Enjoy!
Junior Golfers: The professional staff would like to extend a big THANK YOU to the kids as well as the many volunteers that provided a safe environment for the kids while they enjoyed time on the course. It was truly a FUN season!

Becky’s Bus Trip: Becky would like to say thanks to the ladies for another wonderful Mystery Bus Trip. The Homewood-Flossmoor area will never be the same. I would also like to thank the ladies for returning my able-bodied assistant in reasonable condition. Mums the word!

Cart Safety: In recent weeks there have been numerous episodes in which golf carts have been removed from area garages and taken out for joy rides. In some cases there has even been damage to private property. With that said, please be diligent in making sure your cart is not accessible during overnight hours. It appears that open garages have been the focus of this activity. Thank you in advance for your vigilance.

Seasonal Maintenance:
The month of September brings us the time of year that the Golf Course Maintenance staff is challenged with the task of performing all the various  seasonal maintenance projects (i.e. green, tee, and fairway aerification, overseeding and other miscellaneous projects). The challenge of these projects is the sensitivity of the season, as well as keeping the course playable for all the golfers. If you plan to entertain guests, or just would like a heads up on what area(s) are under renovation, please feel free to give us a call. We will do our best to keep you informed.
In addition to all the seasonal maintenance, the Cart Path project will begin.
In closing, may all your drives find the fairway, your approaches find the green and your (first) putts find the cup.
Go ILLINI……..

Sincerely,
Timothy J. Buscombe
